Alla Prima

A journey towards color and light

Joe Ragey

I paint "alla prima" working in plein air and in the studio. My work centers on creating the effects of light found in nature. Traveling from Big Sur to Point Reyes, I paint landscapes capturing the scenic vistas of the west coast. In the studio, I work from small studies done on location.  The paintings of French, Russian, American Impressionists, and in particular, the early California Impressionists influences my work. Some of the artist’s that I admire include, Joaquin Sorolla, John Singer Sargent, Charles Hawthorne and Guy Rose. As a painter it is important for me to capture the unique qualities of California light.
